This
year The Christmas Revels ® presents
music, song and dance from the diverse cultures of Eastern
Europe and weaves through them the classic Russian folk
tale, The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship
…
ONCE upon a time an old peasant and his wife had three sons.
Two of them were clever young men …
but the third was the Fool of the World - as
simple as a child, simpler than some children,
and he never did anyone a harm in his life.
And so the story goes . . .

The Christmas Revels© is a fully-staged
theatrical production of music, dance, drama and storytelling
rooted in ancient seasonal ritual and traditions.
Unique in its intentional blending of community and
professional theater and its blending of folk and more
formal forms of song and dance, it creates a great celebration
onstage that ends up enveloping the whole theater.
The material is ancient, beautiful, funny and strong
and has an unusual way of touching the players and our
large, multi-age audiences. This show revives the ancient
connection between the community and the arts, between
celebration and the seasons.
The
Christmas Revels© involves
60-90 people on-stage, the heart of which is a large
chorus of adults and children, (auditioned from the
local community) to which we add professional actors,
storytellers, singers, dancers and instrumentalists.
Shows are professionally directed, lit and costumed.
Audiences expect a similar experience from year to year
that revolves around the mid-winter themes of light
and dark. Our challenged is to give the audience
that experience while exposing them each year to a different
time and place (i.e. Italian, Nordic, Celtic, Medieval,
etc). Revels' success is that, while it refers
to ancient tradition, it has become a living tradition
for the community.
