Only a Frenchman could write a story of so much infidelity and still pull off a happy ending. When Offenbach rewrote the tragic Greek love story of Orpheus and Eurydice, he transformed it into a comedy of mythological proportions.

In Offenbach's version, Orpheus is no longer trying to save his beloved wife, but is almost as eager to get rid of her as she is to run off with a new lover. The gods Pluto and Jupiter are happy to assist in the breakup, as both are busy scheming for Eurydice's affections. Along the way, all the gods and a few of the mortals join Pluto in the underworld as he throws a party for the ages.

Join the party at the jewel-box Rialto Theater, where Offenbach and a wonderful cast may take you to hell and back, but are sure to make you laugh throughout the journey.

Young Artist Showcase: Uncommon Mozart

Young Artist Showcase:

Uncommon Mozart

Saturday, February 2, 2008 at 8pm

Sunday, February 3, 2008 at 2pm

Theatre on the Square

Tickets $30

In his one-act singspiel The Impresario, Mozart introduces us to a producer who is struggling to establish an opera company. His first mistake is hiring a comic actor to help him find his performers. Two singers audition for them; a famous diva on the downhill side of her career and a talented beginner. Both want the job, both want to be the prima donna, and both find their true talent in making the impresario's life miserable.

Add a little laughter to your winter at Tacoma Opera's sixth annual Young Artist Showcase. This intimate program combines the vocal talents of our region with some of Mozart's rarest pieces of musical genius. The music will be all Mozart, as the newly-assembled company formed within the story of The Impresario performs other jewels from operas such as La Finta Giardiniera, La Clemenza di Tito and more.
