Broadway Center Presents

Fresh Perspectives Series’ Poet

Glenis Redmond

Media Sponsor: KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio

Tacoma, WA – Known for her spoken word and poetry performances, Glenis Redmond will be performing Monumental: Soaring on the Wings of Love, which include works from her recent CD, at Theatre on the Square on Friday, November 16, 2007 at 7:30pm.

Redmond’s poetry reflects her beliefs in the healing power of praise and gratitude, as well as the gifts that come from loving oneself and others without judgment.  She shares this wisdom with the world through her praise poetry workshops and classes.

Audiences are brought to their feet by the grace, intensity and passion with which Redmond gives life to her poetry. She floats, glides and pounds her way across the stage, her voice rings out, then softens. Her spirit fills the room and the room soars along with her.  Within moments, she has even the most stoic of audiences in her palm and resting in her arms.

Redmond’s work has received numerous awards and recognition. She is a 2005-2006 North Carolina Literary Award recipient and a Denny C. Plattner Award winner for Outstanding Poetry awarded by the journal Appalachian Heritage. Redmond is also a workshop leader with the Kennedy Center's Partnership in Education Program in Washington, D.C.

Her work has aired on National Public Radio, she is a past winner of the Southern Fried Poetry Slam and a top ten finalist in the National Poetry Slam. Redmond has published a full-length book of poetry called Backbone, is the subject of an award-winning video entitled Mama's Magic and has released a CD on her educational work - Glenis On Poetry and another CD of poetry - Monumental.  Her poetry is also featured in numerous journals including the McGraw-Hill African-American Literary Anthology.

Most recently, Redmond has been published in Meridians, African Voices, EMRYS, Asheville Poetry Review, 2006, Kakalak: A Journal of Carolina Poets, Appalachian Heritage and the Appalachian Journal. Her manuscript Under the Sun was short listed by Autumn House Press.
