Consulate General of the Republic of Korean in Seattle presents
Korus Friendship & Korean Cultural Night
Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.
Rialto Theater
The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea is hosting a concert featuring a Korean percussion quartet 'GongMyoung' to celebrate the effectivation of KORUS FTA and the solid alliance between the US and Korea in commemoration of 130th year since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
GongMyoung is a Korean percussion quartet with a driving, almost idealistic passion for music. In Korea as well as overseas, the quartet's debut was reported as being 'exceptional and unconventional' and its music has been considered unprecedented by the traditional musicians of Korea.
The four members of GongMyoung, Sun Il Kang, Seung Won Park, Kyoung Kun Song and Yong Ju Lim studied Korean music at university, and while they held great respect for traditional music, they have never been bound by it. In recent years, classical Korean music has undergone perceptible changes, but is still sometimes difficult to understand or enjoy for those who prefer popular music. Gong Myoung's aim is to create Korean music for all to enjoy, regardless of their age or nationality.
GongMyoung creates music that interweaves genres and cultures with positive results. The musicians play a wide variety of musical instruments and if necessary, will learn new instruments depending on the mood, sound or colour they wish to convey. The members of Gong Myoung now play more than 30 musical instruments, including Korean instruments, as well as the more exotic cahon, djembe and wind bells. Through their ability to meld different musical styles together, Gong Myoung has created a new, fresh sound that is truly their own.
Those who want to attend the concert are required to RSVP via email, seattle0404rsvp@gmail.com by Friday, September 29, 2012 with their full names, number of tickets desired, mailing address, contact information and affiliation if applicable.
